Water-resistant MDF is a special type of wood-based material manufactured from waste material from the timber industry mixed with water-resistant adhesive. Water-resistant MDF retains its shape well and is easy to work with.
The material is often used for models, prototypes and finished furniture or installations. Water-resistant MDF is suitable for outdoor use or in damp environments. Just like standard MDF, it is easy to sand and work with.
Facts
Technical designation: Medium-density fibreboard
Density: 0.75 g/cm³
Tolerance: +/- 10 %
Good to know
MDF is often used for jigs, tests and prototypes, models, props, furniture, jewellery and displays. Waterproof MDF is ideal for items intended for outdoor use.
As MDF is a composite product, the colour may vary from board to board.
Line and surface engraving
Both line and surface engraving are possible on MDF. The material takes on a slightly darker shade where the engraving has been carried out. However, surface engraving is only possible on A-size sheets
Avoid burn marks
Protective film on the top and/or bottom can be selected as an option when ordering, which helps to prevent the worst soot and burn marks from the laser. However, protective film is not available for surface engraving.
Laser cutting
Top – Along the cut line, the wood will take on a slight dark discolouration. This can be prevented by applying film before cutting. This option can be selected when placing your order.
Edges – The edges will turn brown and may stain. Excess soot can be wiped away with a slightly damp cloth, but the edges will remain dark afterwards. Sanding can remove the dark edges completely. Bear in mind that the thicker the MDF, the darker the edges.
Base – Discolouration will occur on the base after cutting. This usually takes the form of a hexagonal pattern, depending on the surface on which the cutting is carried out. A film that removes most of this can be selected when placing your order. For A-size sheets, you can also choose a double-sided adhesive option, which allows you to hang the pieces on, for example, a wall without using nails or screws.
Finishing
Water-resistant MDF can be painted, oiled or varnished to protect the surface and edges.
