Cross-grain veneer with a knife-cut, decorative veneer on one side. The opposite side looks slightly ‘rough’, so two mirror-image pieces can be glued together after cutting if you wish to achieve a uniform finish on both sides
Facts
Technical designation: Veneered cross-grained plywood/Veenered plywood
Weight: 0.6 g/cm³
Tolerance: +/- 20 %
NB! The thickness can vary considerably and is often closer to 5 mm
Good to know
Cross-laminated veneer is often used for architectural models, jewellery, model aeroplanes, model boats, furniture, interior design and signage.
Line and surface engraving
Cross-laminated oak veneer can be engraved using both line and surface techniques. Surface engraving is not possible on sizes larger than A1. The material takes on a darker shade where it is engraved. The deeper the engraving, the darker the colour.
Heavy line and surface engraving may cause discolouration around the engraved area. This is particularly true of surface engraving. However, this can be easily removed by light sanding.
The veneer is approximately 0.5 mm thick. Please bear in mind that deep line and surface engraving may penetrate down to the cross-grain veneer. You should therefore opt for light or medium engraving if you only wish to engrave the surface.
Avoid burn marks
A protective film on the top and/or bottom can be selected as an option when ordering, which helps to prevent the worst soot and burn marks caused by the laser. However, a film cannot be applied in the case of surface engraving.
Wood grain
If you have any preferences regarding the wood grain and your design, please let us know by drawing an arrow in your file to show how we should orient the board. Please also state in the comments field when placing your order that you have specific requirements in this regard.
Applies only to size A.
Laser cutting
Top – Along the cutting line, the wood will take on a slight dark discolouration. This can be prevented by applying a protective film before cutting. This can be selected as an option when placing your order. Remember to remove the foil when you receive your cut pieces.
Edges – The edges appear brown and may stain. Excess soot can be wiped away with a slightly damp cloth, but the edges will remain black afterwards. Sanding can remove the black edges completely.
Base – The base is not always veneered and may therefore look unfinished. There will be discolouration on the base after cutting. This usually takes the form of a hexagonal pattern, depending on the surface on which it is cut. A film that removes most of this can be selected as an option when placing your order. Remember to remove the film when you receive your cut.
Finishing
Oak-veneered cross-grain plywood can be painted, but it is usually left untreated, oiled or varnished to protect the surface.
