MDF

MDF is a special type of wood-based material made from waste material from the timber industry mixed with water-resistant adhesive. MDF retains its shape well and is easy to work with. MDF is often used for models, prototypes and finished furniture or installations. MDF is NOT suitable for outdoor use or in damp environments. In such cases, water-resistant MDF should be used instead. MDF is easy to sand and work with.

Good to know
MDF is often used for jigs, tests and prototypes, models, props, furniture, jewellery and displays.
As MDF is a composite product, the colour may vary from sheet to sheet.

Line and surface engraving
Both line and surface engraving are possible on MDF. The material takes on a slightly darker shade where the engraving has been carried out. Surface engraving, however, is only possible in A-sizes.

Avoid burn marks
A protective film on the top and/or bottom can be selected as an option when ordering, which prevents the worst soot and burn marks from the laser. However, protective film is not available for surface engraving.

Laser cutting
Top side – Along the cut line, the wood will take on a slight dark discolouration. This can be prevented by applying foil before cutting. This option can be selected when ordering.

Edges – The edges will turn brown and may stain. Excess soot can be wiped away with a slightly damp cloth, but the edges will remain black afterwards. Sanding can remove the black edges completely. The thicker the MDF, the darker the edges.

Base – There will be discolouration on the base after cutting. This usually takes the form of a hexagonal pattern, depending on the surface on which the cutting is carried out. Protective film, which removes most of this, can be selected when ordering. For A-sizes, it is also possible to choose a double-sided adhesive backing, which makes it possible to hang the pieces on, for example, a wall without using nails or screws.

Finishing
MDF can be painted, oiled or varnished to protect the surface and edges.
